Critical Review: Romeo and Juliet

“Two households, both alike in dignity, In fair Verona, where we lay our scene.” This simple set of words written hundreds of years ago has been read , discussed, quoted, studied, and acted out ,by more people through time to then William Shakespeare could ever had imagined. Just the simple sound of the two names grabs peoples attention and causes them to bring up memories of good times, college papers, marvelous literature, or even the beautiful representations of the play that have surfaced in our time. The simple ability of conjuring of beautiful moments in their lives is just another miracle of the play, because after all "What's in a name? That which we call a rose, By any other name would smell as sweet." Little did the crowd of people gathered in their small wooden seats at the Globe Theater know that they were about to witness the very making of history, and with a flap of the curtain, and history has begun.
Through out time this play has reached millions of people and has spread its universal message to all, “That love in all forms is an unstoppable force” It is one of the few plays that have a theme that can be understood and related to by all no matter what nationality. For the simple and reason that love exists all over the world, weather it be in the most isolated northern areas of Russia, the crowded cities of chins, or even the war stricken lands of Iraq. It is perhaps one of the few things that has prevailed since the beginning of time and still is an unconquerable force today. The play Romeo and Juliet gives one the of best examples out of all the books that I have ever read of how powerful love can be, and how if it is truly meant to be, then in the end it will always prevail. This is demonstrated in the last scene of the play where Romeo mistakenly believes that Juliet is dead and with the last words “Thus with a kiss I die”
He kills himself by poison by her bedside, only to have Juliet awake a few moments later only to ask “ O comfortable friar! Where is my lord? I do remember well where I should be, and there I am. Where I my Romeo?” she then looks down only to find him dead. And In that moment Juliet realized that the only way that she could be truly happy and at peace was to join her one true love Romeo in the eternal rest that he was now in, and so she took Romeo’s Blade and barred it deep into her chest and fell back on to the bed to be with her Romeo for eternity.
This marvelous play will continue to be read and will undoubtedly stir up more questions as well as essays written on its theme, And although all thoughts of this piece of literature may not be the same the basic underlining principle that True love can never fail will continue to be understood and demonstrated all over the globe. Because after all , as David Weil a proffesor at Boston Universitty once said, “Shakespeare isn’t just American’
